Make sure that your customers are finding you by optimizing your Web site. However, be wary of the sneaky SEO practices, such as social media and blog comment spam, and article marketing. Always make sure you and your marketing firm are engaging in SEO ethically. Like in the pest control business, there are always a few rats!

1. Choose Keywords Wisely.  An Ad-ology Research report found that bed bugs are a rampant problem; 99 percent of respondents said they encountered a bed bug infestation in the last year. Armed with that knowledge, make sure you talk extensively about your bed bug solutions. Don’t stop there! Particularly since pest control is such a local business, be sure to talk about the areas you serve, and be specific, because your customers will be when they Google. Be aware that having keywords is one piece of SEO; make sure your Web site is formatted in a pleasing way, use bold font in the headlines, and repeat keywords in your headlines.

2. Engage in Linkbuilding.  Linkbuilding is a standard SEO tactic that links your Web site to other, reputable sites. Each link will make it easier for you to stand out, according to a search engine’s algorithm. But, remember that you need to seriously consider the link. A link from the New York Times will have a ton more weight than your local neighborhood paper. This tactic takes some time, as you will need to make sure your own content is exemplary, and you’ll need to network with other Web site owners to build your links.

3. Use Social Media.  You’re probably already using Facebook and Twitter, but did you know that your activities on social media will affect your SEO? Search engines know the influence social media has, so they “count” towards your page rank. Additionally, engaging in social media will get your customers, and potential customers, talking. In fact, ROI Research for Performance found that 53 percent of people on Twitter recommend companies and/or products in their Tweets.

4. Hire an SEO Expert. Focus on pest control while an SEO firm focuses on optimizing your Web site. Look for SEO experts with strong writing and marketing skills, since it’s those two things that will make your Web site take off.
