Search Engine Optimization for landscapers, also known as SEO, helps your Web site achieve dominance over your competitors by working with search engine’s algorithms to help propel your Web site to the top of the search results. Now more than ever, optimizing your landscaping business’s Web site is important. In fact, a recent report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. titled “Landscaping Services: A US Market Report” found that the landscaping industry is experiencing a bounce back. By 2015, Global Industry Analysts predict that the landscaping services market in the U.S. will reach $80.06 billion.

SEO Tips and Strategies

Due to the competitive nature of the landscaping business, it will be difficult to earn a high page rank. Start now, establish your Web site and begin to engage in SEO related activities, and you will see a bump in your page rank. Keep in mind that it will be very difficult to compete on a national level, so keep your sights set on your local community, even narrowing down your efforts to a specific neighborhood. By staying local, you have a better chance of achieving a high page rank.

SEO Tactics

  1. Choose Your Keywords Wisely: When thinking up a list of keywords to promote your landscaping business, you’ll need to get into the head of your potential customer. Don’t rely too heavily on industry jargon; instead, think about what your customer will be searching for. Key phrases like “lawn mower service, Milwaukee” will help boost you above your local competition. To gain an even greater edge, utilize keywords that describe specific neighborhoods and suburbs that you service. Another component to choosing keywords is making sure your Web site pages are formatted well. Choose bold fonts for the headlines, and create landing pages for each area of your landscaping business.
  2. Build Links: Your Web site’s page rank will be determined in part by the amount and quality of links to and from your Web site. The more quality links you have posting to your Web site, the higher your page rank will be (page rank refers to how important a search engine deems your Web site). Be cautious here: only choose quality links, do not link to everything you can. This will actually be detrimental to your Web site.
  3. Show Your Work: Pictures of your landscaping design and hard work will take you far in earning more customers. But don’t limit yourself by just posting pictures. Search engines can read the file names and alt tags (which is a short piece of code that lets you include a caption with your photo). Name each photo well, and be specific about what is going on in the photo within the alt tag.
  4. Choose a Great SEO Company: There are many SEO companies out there competing for the business of a landscaper. When choosing an SEO company, look for excellent marketing and writing experience. Make sure that you are choosing a company that will not outsource its writing; you need to make sure that your Web site is being written by native English speakers who understand the landscaping industry.
